“Uniformity is not nature’s way; diversity is nature’s way.”

“Everything I need to know I learned from the forest.”

- Dr. Vandana Shiva, Gandhian environmental activist and agro-ecologist

This incredible tree is real! It is the Eucalyptus deglupta, the Rainbow Eucalyptus, the tree with “peeling skin.” The Rainbow Eucalyptus is native to Indonesia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. In its original, natural environment, this amazing tree may grow as tall as 250 feet!

The Rainbow Eucalyptus sheds its outer bark, revealing bright green colors. As the exposed green layer beneath ages, the colors darken and develop into brilliant shades of blues and purples. Further aging of the exposed bark results in the emergence of brilliant oranges and reds.

The leaves of the Rainbow Eucalyptus are various shades of light green and

grey-green, and produce tiny white, fragrant flowers.

The Eucalyptus deglupta is the only species of eucalyptus native to the Northern Hemisphere. The Rainbow Eucalyptus may now be seen in various places around the world, such as Hawaii and coastal California. Now it is even possible to order a “starter tree” for your planting. However, the colors are most vibrant and varied on trees living in their native habitat.

If we have a wonderful sense of the divine,

it is because we live amid such awesome magnificence.”

– Thomas Berry

Better late than never to this party of analogy and insight! Thank you for this beautiful site. I look forward to sharing it far and wide, as it speaks my heart. There is no border between science and spirit; they share the language of wonder for a reason. I'm glad you don't shy away from the awe in sacrifice and consumption and decay, and look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on that side of the Way of things.
